Task 2- P2

Task 2 - P2
The graphical images used Kingswood Website, school vehicles and brochures can be either a vector graphic or a bitmap graphic. Vector graphics, unlike bitmap graphics are not made up of small blocks of pixels, they made of paths which contain points and curves. This allows the images to be enlarged without a loss of quality. Therefore they are very useful to make logos among other creations. Common types of vector graphics include Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, and EPS files. Bitmap graphics are made up of individual coloured squares make up the image. If you try to enlarge or zoom in on the image it becomes pixelated and blurred. Common bitmap file types include BMP (the raw bitmap format), JPEG, GIF, PICT, PCX, and TIFF.

  • The brochure, the images used could either be vector or bitmap graphics. The images used will only be small scale; therefore the images won’t be enlarged and will not become pixelated. To create the brochure you could use publisher and use edited images from software such as Photoshop. On some of the pages, larger images may be required, this would mean that vector graphics would best option, so the quality is not lost when the images are enlarged.

  • The logo on the school vehicle will need to be vector graphics, because it will be a large scale logo. The file type must stay the same quality and not become blurry, so it is easy to see. If bitmap graphics were used, the logo would be very pixelated which looks like a poor quality, as the graphics are made up of the small blocks of colour, and when these are enlarged the blocks become blurry. Therefore vector graphics would be the better choice for the logo on the vehicle.

  • The school website, bitmap graphics would be good to use for the smaller images as they are easy files to use e.g. JPEGs. However if larger images are needed on different web pages then vector graphics could be used. This is due to bitmap graphics becoming pixelated if they were to be enlarged this would result in the reduction of quality. Whereas the vector graphics ensure that the image quality will be good.

Overall vector graphics are the best option for these different uses as it creates an overall better quality for the logo, brochure and the school website, generating a more professional effect.

Task 1 - P1 and M1

Task 1 P1 and M1-unit 30
I will use various types of hardware and software to create the imagery digitally. There are four different will be:

·         Hardware basics
- Computer, monitor, keyboard and mouse.
These are a necessity for making the required graphic images. A computer is required in order to create the images. However there can be different limitations to certain things when working with both hardware and software. The limitation to this could be that the computer may be expensive depending on the brand/manufacture e.g. Apple Mac.
A monitor is needed to be able to see what the images look like. However there is a limitation to this if there is only one monitor available then it could make it harder for the work to be complete efficiently; this could be overcome by having Dual display, making it easier to create pieces of work depending on the software.
A keyboard and mouse are two other hardware basics which are needed as these are the main way we can create the images as they can be used to change and edit the images displayed.

·         Hardware input
-Digital camera, scanner and graphics tablet.
There are several hardware inputs that could be used to create the imagery digitally. A digital camera could be used to upload the images onto the computer before they are edited. A limitation to this may be the quality of the image that is produced due to the number of megapixels the camera has.
A scanner will be required in order to get some images onto the computer to edit. It is an easy way to transfer images on paper onto the computer. A limitation to this is also the quality of the image produced and the size of the image that is produced can be another limitation as the image could be larger than the equipment, and have to be scanned and joined together to get the entire picture. E.g. the scanner is only A4, whereas the image may be A3.
A graphics tablet would be a very useful device for a graphics designer as it allows them to draw without using a mouse, it easier to draw on the computer.

·         Hardware output
- Printer, projector, vinyl cutter and file storage devices
Hardware output is also very useful and important when designing graphic images. Printers are very important as they allow us to have a paper copy of the images that have been designed. A limitation to this is also the quality of the image produced and the size of the image that is produced can be another limitation as the image could be larger than the equipment, and have to be copied and joined together to get the entire picture.  Another limitation of this would be that the printer does not print to the fully to the edge of the paper.
A projector is also useful as it allows the graphic image to be shown on screens larger, where it can be shown in a presentation and it is visually easier to see. A limitation to this would be expensive for the all the equipment needed to use this device.
Vinyl cutters cut out shapes on plastic and cardboard. It can be used when a logo is designed; a vinyl cutter could cut it out onto plastic. It’s a way to turn the image on the computer to be made into a useful object. A limitation of this would be expensive as you have to buy the plastic and the cutter to create the logo needed.
File storage devices provide ways to save the images onto floppy disks and memory sticks, which means that the graphic images can be transferred to and from different devices. A limitation to this could be could become corrupt and may lose valuable data that is needed.

·         Software
- Photo manipulation, drawing packages for logos etc. and desk top publishing
Software is required create graphic design. Photo manipulation is where the designer can manipulate and change the original imaging e.g. Photoshop. Drawing packages for logos are also useful as they are very helpful when it comes to logo design. It makes it easier to design the images on the computer.
Desk top publishing also allows a large amount of documents to be printed cheaply, so for graphic designers images can be printed many times e.g. Microsoft word.
Most of software’s are difficult to understand how they work, therefore making it harder to get a good end result. This is a limitation to using these different types of software as some training may be required.
