Unit 2:P7

Tests: Software applications open and work as intended. Default folder settings are correct. Desktop shortcuts go to the right place. The correct device drivers are installed. The correct paper sizes are set for printing. Menu options work as intended. The correct date and time are set.
Method: Click on icon to open the applications. Check the settings and also check the areas of which they should be in. Click on the shortcut and check that it proceeds to the right page. Check they are installed by clicking on the control panel. In a document, Click on file and then print preview to ensure the page size is correct. Click open a document and check that there are the correct options available Right click on the date and time and can be adjusted if needed.
Expected outcome: The applications should be able to easily be opened and for them to work efficiently. When saving a document, folders etc. should be present in the appropriate areas. The shortcuts should link to the correct programme. The device drivers should be set up for the devices e.g. printers. The paper size should be set up at A4 for printing. Menu option should be visible when a document is opened. The date and time should be set correctly.
Actual outcome: They opened as they should and run smoothly without any malfunctions e.g. freezing. Saving the document in the appropriate place was easily done, as the default folder settings were correct. When I carried out this test, the shortcuts linked me to the appropriate site or document etc. The necessary devices drivers were all set up and allowed easy access to the management of the devices. There was no need for any changes as the paper sizes were already set up at A4. The options were displayed once a document is open, allowing options to select programmes etc. The date and time were set correctly already without having to alter this.

Unit 2: M2

Different computer systems have different features, which can be used in a number of ways specific to the users expectations. A PC in comparison to a Mac, has a number of various features e.g. The operating systems on a Mac operating is more stable than the PC, however multiple people do not like the layout of this operating system. The PC’s operating system is not as stable as the manufacturers build in pre-installed software into the computers although it does not offer any leverage to the user.
Security is one of the various feature available to the users, many people use PC’s that have Windows installed. This makes the computer more vulnerable to viruses in comparison to Macs, they are much less vulnerable to any security threats which would be much safer if being used by a company, which would be a good choice to keep anything confidential and secure.
The Mac can be limited to the amount of software that can be installed, but with the help of Boot camp allowing Windows programmes to be installed and enables them to run. With the PC, many different types of software and programmes can be installed easily. Meaning that both PC and Mac can could be used in the company as they perform the same jobs in a similar way.
Price is an influential area when choosing between a PC and a Mac. The PC is cheaper than the Mac, although some people believe that the money spent on the Mac is worth it as there are not as many issues with security etc. In a large company the cost of many Macs would be considerably high, therefore the PC’s would be cheaper to buy.  However looking at the long term view Macs would better in terms of saving money due to the reduces amount of repairs etc. that are needed, making them much more reliable than PC’s.

Overall the Mac would be the better option out of the two operating systems for the company to use. Even though there is a high cost, they are much more reliable etc.

Unit 2: M3 and D2

NovaBench was used to test a HP Compaq, in May 2014. As the computer is a couple of years old, there are not up to date features on the system. The CPU test produced a high score of 186. One improvement needed would be graphics test as it scored 2, which is exceptionally low. This could be corrected by buying a graphics card, so the graphics test score would increase.  Another improvement would be hardware, as the test produced a score of 14 this is somewhat lower than the super computers score, this could be improved by installing a new hard drive.  This could be another improvement as the RAM test produced a score of 84 which is a considerable difference compared to the super computers score of 175, this could be improved by buying a number of chips to increase the RAM, and helping the computer to do more things at any one time.
The total score for the HP Compaq is 286; this is much lower than the total average system as it has a score of 547.

NovaBench was used to test a super computer on the 14th March 2011, which was produced with up to date features of the time. The graphics test for this computer created a high score of 954. There was not as much of a decent result from the hardware test this would be one of the improvements as the score was 18 which is fairly low. This could be rectified by a new hard drive being fitted to help increase the score of the test; this gives the user more support when downloading larger files etc. Another improvement that could be made would be the RAM as the score was 175, it is not remarkably low, but could still be increased. This could be rectified by the help of assortment of chips to improve the RAM speed and the score on the test.

From comparison graph, the computer was more developed than the average computer as the system reached a score of 1878; this is better compared to the average systems score of 547.

Assessment and grading criteria
P5 set up a standalone computer system, installing hardware and software components [SM3]

For P5, learners must install at least one hardware and one software component in a stand-alone system.
This is best evidenced with a witness statement or observation record and screen shots. Learners must use suitable safety equipment/tools and pay due regard to health and safety issues.

How the activity meets the requirements of the assessment and grading criteria,
including how and where the activity took place
I witnessed Lauren connect the monitor, keyboard and mouse to the computer. She was able to clearly demonstrate where the graphic card is installed.   She managed to install the MS Office 2003, the MS security essentials and the device driver for a printer.  She created a user account and configured the system software, application software and documents. This all took place in IV5.
